In 1981, Doug and Sandy McKinney moved to Asheville to start an insurance business, and a family. They had both been working for Nationwide and decided they wanted to start their own branch. They purchased an existing property and casualty agency and expanded it to commercial and life insurance as well. This is the story of McKinney Insurance Services.

The business today is still family-owned and operated, with Doug being a co-owner and president, while their son Chad is a co-owner and principal agent. Sandy often tells stories of bringing Chad in as a baby while she worked in the same office that Chad now sits and works in. The hallways have South Buncombe Athletic Recreation Association plaques hanging of Doug coaching young Chad’s baseball teams with McKinney Insurance Services on their jerseys.
